What’s Happening This Weekend in Philly: December 9-11

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and culture places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. 1. Walnut Street Theatre Wizard of Oz


Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St
When: Runs through January 8th, various times

The Main Stage of the Walnut Street Theatre continues to entertain and leave audiences swept away. Their production of the famed musical “The Wizard of Oz” has something for everyone. Adapted by John Kane for the Royal Shakespeare Company, this musical will have you singing its memorable musical pieces all night long. Tickets start at $20. 2. David Crosby


Where: Keswick Theater, 291 Keswick Ave. Glenside, PA
When: Friday, December 9th, 8PM

The Keswick Theater presents “An Evening with David Crosby & Friends”. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and California native, David Crosby comes to Glenside, PA this weekend. He was a founding member of the Byrds and Crosby, Still & Nash. Many of his albums are listed in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” This will be a night with an iconic and legendary rock star that you won’t forget.

3. Opening of The Nutcracker at The Pennsylvania Ballet


Where: Academy of Music, 240 S Broad St.
When: Opens Friday, December 9th and runs through December 31st, various times

It’s December. Chestnuts are roasting on the fire. If they’re not, the song that’s been echoing on the radio for days, says they are. The holiday season also wouldn’t be complete without George Balanchine’s “The Nutcracker”. The hallmark of the Philadelphia Christmas season is the Pennsylvania Ballet’s annual reprisal of this ultimate classic. Come hear the orchestra strum, see some of the greatest performers in the world grace the stage, and get enraptured by all the magic this production has to offer.

4. Greensgrow Farms Holiday Bazaar


Where: Greensgrow Farms, 2501 E Cumberland St.
When: Saturday, December 10th– Sunday, December 11th, 10AM-4PM

For the second December weekend in a row, the Greensgrow Farms opens its door for the Holiday Bazaar. This is the last weekend for you to purchase collectibles and handmade trinkets this shopping season. Here you can find the best stocking stuffers and personalized gifts for the special people in your life. Local artists and growers will be in attendance. The farm will have tremendous evergreen trees, wreaths, and holiday decor for all areas.

5. Parade of Lights


Where: Independence Seaport Museum, 211 S Columbus Blvd.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 11:30AM-6PM

This holiday favorite returns to the Independent Seaport Museum. This one-night only event lasts from the morning and  endures through the waning hours of sunset. At sunset, the show truly begins as guests will be able to see a parade of festively decorated boats that will be blasting music from the season. Earlier in the day there will be a pop-up exhibit, face painting, live music, Santa Clause, and much more.

6. Arctic Avenue Festival


Where: 1904 E Passyunk Ave.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 11AM

This Passyunk Avenue holiday treasure falls right in line with the area’s local second Saturday celebration. The second annual Arctic Ave celebration will have live ice carvings, music, shopping discounts and deals, and a whole lot more. There will be free photos, prizes and giveaways, an appearance by Frozen’s Olaf, and several other activities. This free event will have plenty of food vendors and a cocktail crawl made of specialty drinks.

7. WinterFest at King of Prussia Town Center


Where: King of Prussia Town Center, 2 Village Dr. King of Prussia, PA
When: Saturday, December 10th, 10:30AM-4PM

Let’s face it, if you live in the area, you’ve tried crossing gifts off your holiday shopping list at least once at the King of Prussia Mall by now. If you’re in the area this Saturday the King of Prussia Town Center will be hosting an inaugural Winterfest for all. There will be a performance by local school choirs, ice sculpture carvings, a cookie decoration and hot chocolate station, samples from Fogo De Chao, and more. There will also be a coat donation area for Cradles for Crayons.

8. TOY 10 Year Anniversary Party


Where: Sky Philadelphia, 1717 Arch St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 7PM-10PM

The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund will be hosting a spectacular party to benefit the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and those served by Action Wellness. Guests are asked to bring one unwrapped toy to the event. There will be specialty drinks and beverages, a silent auction with a wide spectrum of things up for grabs, and tasty food. Guests will be able to take in the full panoramic view from the 51st floor of the Logan Square building on a great December night.

9. Winter Wonderland 2016 at Smith Memorial


Where: Smith Memorial Playground & Playhouse, 3500 Reservoir Dr.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 4PM-6PM

Presented by PECO this Winter Wonderland at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse will have never-ending family fun. There will be a holiday lighting, arts and crafts, an ice carving demonstration, and many more diverse activities. There will also be a gingerbread house building segment, live music, and s’mores. The $10 per child event will have decorations and beverages donated by Wegmans, Old City Coffee, and more. Adults are free as long as they’re accompanied by a child.

10. Rittenhouse Row Holiday Fashion Crawl


Where: Rittenhouse Row, 1831 Chestnut St.
When” Saturday, December 10th, 12PM-3PM

With the holidays right around the corner come to the annual Holiday Fashion Crawl at Rittenhouse Row. The event will be highlighting fashion and the best in mixology from the area. Partnering with Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), this free event will have a great lineup of shops and boutiques. Attendees will be given a map that will show participating stores such as Swarovski, Brooks Brothers, Lagos, and more. There will also be a raffle for gift baskets, gift certificates, and other fantastic giveaways.

11. 2016 Annual South Philly Handmade Brigade


Where: 1241 Carpenter St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 11AM-6PM

It’s the 11th year of this community craft event. The South Philly Handmade Brigade claims to be the “best annual holiday party in Philadelphia”. The shopping event will have artwork, glass, jewelry, ceramics, and affordable gifts from local artists. Photographer Jessica Kourkounis will be on hand and other diverse and talented individual artists. This will be a great event to find holiday gifts for your friends and family.

12. Rocky 40th Anniversary Screening at the Kimmel Center


Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S Broad St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 3PM & 8PM

In December 1976, a movie was released that became part of the engrained fabric and tradition of Philadelphia. Rocky was one of the most iconic films of its time. This year marked the 40th year since the motion picture’s release. MGM Studios released a 4K version that takes this action paced fight film to all new heights. Come to the Kimmel Center and see this special presentation that’s sponsored by Pat’s Steaks and Philadelphia magazine’s Victor Fiorillo.

13. Running of the Santas Mega Festival 2016


Where: Electric Factory, 421 N 7th St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 10AM-11:30PM

This is a two location event. The North Pole is located at the Electric Factory and the South Pole can be found Field House at 1150 Filbert St. This Yuengling Lager sponsored event is the biggest Santa Party in the country. Over 10,000 individuals in festive clothing will be at this raucous day party in the city. There will be a mix of several DJs in attendance, drink specials, and VIP areas throughout both venues. The crawl from the North Pole to the South begins at 5PM.

14. Bar Crawl Nation: Santa Palooza Philadelphia


Where: The Gaslight, 120 Market St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 2PM-10PM

Dust out your Santa suits and Mrs. Claus gear, reindeer costumes, and ugly sweaters! This epic and festive bar crawl is taking the holidays to epic proportions. Bar Crawl Nation returns to Philadelphia for this Christmas themed and drinking party. Thousands of partygoers and 10 of Old City’s best bars will merge to make this event a crawl to remember. Guests will get a souvenir t-shirt and a portion of the proceeds will go to Toys for Tots. Tickets are $25

15. Captain’s Vintage Punk Rock Holiday Bazaar Flea Market Extravaganza


Where: 5070 Parkside Ave.
When: Saturday, December 10th at 10AM-5PM, Sunday, December 11th at 11AM-5PM

Don’t know what to get the Punk Rock lover in your family for Christmas? Come to this craft event that will have over 50+ vendors with collectibles and more for sale. There will be jewelry, records, vintage clothing and antiques, and much more. The $2 to enter  event will have food trucks, live music, and a different lineup of vendors each day. There will also be free parking.

16. UFC 206 at Revolutions


Where: Revolutions at Penn Treaty, 1009 Canal St.
When: Saturday, December 10th, 8PM- 2AM

Penn Treaty’s entertainment hotspot Revolutions will be hosting the ultimate UFC 206 party this weekend. Come see the famed matchup between Max Holloway vs Anthony Pettis which will  broadcasts on every screen in the venue. There will be half off appetizers, $3 Yuengling drafts from 8p.m. until closing time and live music between fights by DJ Lee. You can also make lane reservations for the event for up to six people. This will be an exciting place to watch this highly anticipated matchup.

17. PAFA Free Admission


Where: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA), 118N Broad St.
When: Sunday, December 11th, 11AM-5PM

The Pennsylvania Academy of Performing Arts (PAFA) is one of the great artistic and cultural institutions in the city. Every Sunday during the World War I and American Art exhibit, entry into the museum is free. Thanks to the Exelon Foundation and PECO guests can come check out he following exhibits on display, A Big Story, From the PAFA Foundry: 30 Years of Casting, Crosscurrents, Melt/Carve/Forge: Embodied Sculptures By Cassils, and Thomas Eakins: Photographer. Come see these artistic marvels in all of their amazing glory.

18. Tory Lanez


Where: Trocadero Theater, 1003 Arch St.
When: Sunday, December 11th, 8PM

This Sunday Canadian hip hop recording artist Tory Lanez will be in Philadelphia. The “Say It” singer released his debut studio album I Told You in August this year. Fresh off his Grammy nomination for his R&B smash “Luv”, Lanez will have the Trocadero Theater rocking with chart-topping singles and his high octane and smooth performance. Come see one of the fresh and vocally unique acts in R&B.

19. 96.5 AMP Radio “Let It Snow”


Where: BB&T Pavilion, 1 Harbor Boulevard. Camden, NJ
When: Sunday, December 11th, 6PM

Local radio power house 96.5 AMP presents “Let It Snow”. This multi-genre concert will draw thousands to the BB&T Pavilion this Sunday. Grammy award nominees The Chainsmokers and Mike Posner, R&B and pop star JoJo, electronic music group Cash Cash, and French DJ Kungs will all be rocking the crowd all night long. This is a fantastic lineup at this outdoor amphitheater along the river front. If you’re a fan of any of these acts or a music lover, this is the place to be.
