What’s Happening in Philly This Weekend: Dec. 15-17

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and culture places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. The Color Purple

Where: The Forrest Theatre, 1114 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Sunday, December 17th

The award-winning film turned award-winning musical, The Color Purple will be playing in Philadelphia over the next few days. Come see the exciting production that explores family the dynamics of self-image, togetherness, trauma, and more all set to amazing music.

2. Movies at the Rink

Where: Blue Cross RiverRink, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Runs through Monday, December 25th

The Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfesrt holds screenings for their Twelve Days of Christmas Movies series each season. This Friday there will be a screening of The Brady Bunch A Very Brady Christmas, this Saturday A Charlie Brown Christmas will be the main event, and this Sunday This Christmas will be center stage.

3. Miracle on 13th St.

Where: 1600 S. 13th St.
When: Runs through Sunday, December 31st

South 13th Street produces a dynamic light show each year. The Miracle on 13th Street Holiday Light Display spans the entire avenue. This Saturday from 6:30PM-8:30PM Santa Claus and The Merry Crew will be in attendance to take pictures with you and your entire family.

4. The Glorious Sounds of Christmas

Where: Verizon Hall, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, December 17th

The Philadelphia Orchestra will be performing a The Glorious Sounds of Christmas concert all through the weekend. Conductor Bramwell Tovey will be leading the musical feature as the orchestra plays seasonal classics and favorites. Santa Claus and other guests will make appearances during the performance.

5. Pop-Up Market at the Barnes Foundation

Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway
When: Friday, December 15th, 5PM-8PM

This Friday afternoon and evening the Barnes Foundation will be hosting an Open House: Pop-Up Holiday Market. There wil be tons of collectibles, art pieces, crafts, and more. The event will also have winter bites and sips catered. This is a free to enter event.

6. H-I-S-T-O-R-Y

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, December 15th-Sunday, December 17th

Local dance company and ensemble Philadanco will be putting on a production of their feature dance spectacle H-I-S-T-O-R-Y this weekend. The Perelman Theater inside the Kimmel Center will have all this energy, exciting rhythmic movement, and vibrant choreography gracing its stage through Sunday.

7. Shawn Wayans

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Friday, December 15th & Saturday, December 16th

Actor, comedian, writer, and producer Shawn Wayans will be doing a multiple night residency at Punch Line Philly over the next few days. The Scary Movie, The Wayans Bros, and White Chicks actor will be bringing thunderous laughs to the unique comedy club for shows that you don’t want to miss.

8. 76ers vs. Thunder

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Friday, December 15th, 7PM

The Philadelphia 76ers will be taking on Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder this Friday night. Simmons, Embiid, and the team will look to improve their fourteen record. Come to the Wells Fargo Center this Friday night as the team will need all your energy to take on this talented opponent.

9. Chestnut Hill Holiday Parade

Where: 8300 Germantown Ave.
When: Saturday, December 16th, 9AM

This Saturday morning the Chestnut Hill Holiday Parade will be lining Germantown Avenue. Decorated fire engines will be roaring through the streets, there will be live music, antique cars, Santa Claus, marching bands, and more. Bring your entire family out to enjoy one of the local tradictions of the holiday.

10. PETCO Mega Adopt

Where: 23rd St. Armory, 22 S. 23rd St.
When: Saturday, December 16th-Sunday, December 17th, 10AM-6PM

The Brandywine Valley SPCA and PETCO Foundation will be teaming up this Saturday to host a mega adoption event. There will be over 1,000 animals and furry friends up for adoption at this philanthropic and animal loving gathering. Come find the newest member of your family this weekend.

11. Mt. Airy Art Garage Holiday Market

Where: 7165 Germantown Ave.
When: Saturday, December 16-Sunday, December 17th, 12PM-6PM

Come down to Germanton Avenue to be impressed by some of the best crafts in the city. The holiday season is a great time to recognize the gift of art. The MT. Airy Art Garage Holiday Market will take place this Saturday and Sunday. Several local artist will be on full display and celebrated at this wonderful community shopping event.

12. Saturday Concert Series: West Philadelphia Orchestra

Where: Philadelphia City Institute, 1905 Locust St.
When: Saturday, December 16th, 3PM

This Saturday the brass band the West Philadelphia Orchestra will be performing a free concert at the Philadelphia City Institute. Come to the Rittenhouse Square adjacent facility to hear great music from these talented area artists. This is a free to enter and family-friendly event.

13. Kris Kringle Crawl

Where: Various locations
When: Saturday, December 16th, 12PM-6PM

Family-Friendly gets punted from the list with this next entry. This Saturday is the first annual Center City Kris Kringle Crawl. For just $20 you’ll get access to drink specials from Drinkers Pubs, Misconduct Tavern, and other establishments. The holidays calls for shopping, Christmas movies, food, and great drinks with your friends. You’ll check one thing of that list with this event for sure.

14. Flyers vs. Stars

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Saturday, December 16th , 7PM

The Wells Fargo Center makes another stop on this list with a Saturday night square off between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Central Division Dallas Stars. The Flyers have gained momentum ripping off five consecutive victories. Come to the center to cheer on the Flyers as they bring all the action to the ice.

15. Santa Baby at XFINITY Live!

Where: XFINITY Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, December 16th, 9PM-12AM

This Saturday night XFINITY Live! will be hosting a blowout Christmas party at their massive entertainment complex. Santa will be in attendance for photo opportunities, there will be a pile of wrapped presents to give away, drink specials, and more. Dressing in a ugly Christmas sweater will get you many opportunities for fantastic prizes.

16. Rittenhouse Square Menorah Lighting

Where: Rittenhouse Square
When: Sunday, December 17th, 5PM

Center City isn’t just a place celebrating the Christmas tree enthused. This Sunday the Lubavitch of Center City will be hosting a Rittenhouse Square Menorah Lighting Ceremony. There will also be a children friendly pre-lighting ceremony including juggling, Chanukah treats, games, and more.

17. Greenhouse Yoga

Where: Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, 100 N. Horticultural Dr.
When: Sunday, December 17th, 1PM-2:30PM

Fitness is always a bonus on any given day. This Sunday the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center will their  weekly Yoga in the Greenhouse event. Class are free for conservancy members and $10 for non-members. The instructional event is open to participants for all levels of yoga.  Come to the serenity of this beautiful space and enjoy a centering workout.

18. Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Where: Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St.
When: Sunday, December 17th, 3PM & 7PM

The Wells Fargo Center will be rocking this Sunday when the marriage between electric sound, metal, and blazing lights offers up this amazing concert. Trans-Siberian Orchestra presents this The Ghost of Christmas Eve musical experience. There will be laser, extreme lighting, your favorite Christmas songs turned to power rock anthems, and more.
