What’s happening in Philly this weekend: June 22-24

Each weekend, we will post some of the most unique social and cultural places to visit in addition to exciting events in and around the Philly area. We call it Philly Influencer’s Weekend Picks. Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Philly Podcast Festival 

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, June 22nd-Sunday, July 1st

The 6th Annual Philadelphia Podcast Festival begins this Friday. There will be over 50 featured podcasts recording live in the City of Brotherly Love over the next two weeks. The festival includes the “Last Podcast on the Left“, “Part-Time Genius“, “Ridiculous History“, “Overdue“, “We Got This“, “3 Black Femmes“, and several other successful productions. This year’s venue will include The Trocadero, Good Good Comedy Theatre, Philly Improv Theater, Tattooed Mom, Amalgam Comics and Coffeehouse, Victoria Freehouse, Ruba Club, and Uncle Bobbie’s.

2. All-American BBQ

Where: Dilworth Park, Dilworth Park, 1 S. 15th St.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 24th

This Wednesday through Sunday, the All-American BBQ will be outlining City Hall. There will be drinks, tremendous BBQ food, and more. Dilworth Park will be booming with the sounds of live entertainment, DJs, games, and plenty of other activities. This Thursday and Friday, the hours are 5-9pm The weekend hours for this Center City soiree are 12-6pm.

3. Friday Nights at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Where: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, June 22nd, 5pm-8:30pm

Each Friday, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a weekly Final Fridays series each week. The event merges music, art, cocktails, small plates, culture, and crafts. This Friday, Rob Curto’s Forró for All will be playing a lively set. The sounds of  Brazilian music will fill the halls of this famed institute.

4. Champions of Magic

Where: Kimmel Center, 300 S Broad St.
When: Runs through Sunday, June 24th

These five world-famous illusionists and magicians have been featured on Access Hollywood Live, The Next Great Magician, Good Morning Britain, Penn & Teller: Fool Us,  and Caught On Camera with Nick Cannon. Bring your friends and family out to the Kimmel Center to see levitations, disappearances, amazing effects, and more.

5. Rev’s Retro Summer Performances

Where: Various locations
When: Thursday, June 21st, Friday, June 22nd, and Wednesday, June 27th

Rev Theatre Company will be hosting 1940s cabaret-themed performances over the next seven days. There will be wonderful musical productions taking place in spacious local parks. This Thursday come out to Bardascino Park (10th & Carpenter).  Friday’s performance will take place at  Dickinson Square Park (4th & Tasker).  On Wednesday, June 27th, bring your friends and family out to Hawthorne Park (12th & Catharine). The performances start at 7 pm.

6. Ray Lamontange 

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Friday, June 22nd, 7:30PM

Singer-songwriter Ray Lamontagne will be playing at the scenic Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing this Friday night. The Grammy award-winner released his seventh studio album in May 2018 titled Part of the Light. Listening to his signature vocals and harmonies will be a great way to spend a Friday night on the waterfront.

7. Twilight in the Gardens

Where: Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St.
When: Friday, June 22th, 7PM-10PM

The beautifully structured Philadelphia Magic Gardens will be continuing its Twilight in the Gardens party series this Friday. There will be live music and plenty of arts and crafts making at this event. It’s BYOB and will feature performers and teaching artists on location.

8. Juneteenth Celebrations

Where: Parade will kick off at 15th & JFK and end at Penn’s Landing
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 10:20AM-9PM

This community embracing event will include a massive music festival and a parade. Aside from Saturday’s parade, there will be community leaders panel this Thursday, an Honoring the Ancestors Ceremony this Friday, and several activities celebrating freedom and the passing of the 13th Amendment.

9. The Great Inflatable Race: Philadelphia 

Where: Warminster Community Park, 300 Veterans Way.Warminster, PA
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 9AM-12PM

I used to strategize watching Legends of the Hidden Temple for moments like this. The Great Inflatable Race: Philadelphia comes to the area this weekend. This crazy obstacle course is clustered with littered inflated sections, zany elements, and more. This fun run will have you and your family testing your skill and offers up a good time.

10. Manayunk Arts Festival

Where: Main Street, Manayunk
When: Saturday, June 23rd & Sunday, June 24th, 11AM-6PM

Hundreds of local and nationally known artisans and crafters will descend upon Main Street Manayunk this weekend. The 29th Annual Manayunk Arts Festival will feature jewelry, ceramics, handcrafted pieces, glassworks, and more. This bustling shopping excursion is one of the highlights in Manayunk each year.

11. Summer Ale Festival

Where: Philadelphia Zoo, 3400 W Girard Ave.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 7PM-10PM

The Philadelphia Zoo will be the place to be this Saturday as it hosts its annual Summer Ale Festival. VIP access gets you early entry to this specialty brew event. Guests will get a souvenir tasting cup, unlimited beer samplings, complimentary shuttle service. Your ticket also includes admission to the zoo. There will be food trucks on location, live entertainment, and more.

12. Molestice 

Where: 100 block of N. Mole Street
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 12PM-8PM

Continuing in the block party theme, the masses will be coming out to Molestice 2018 this Saturday. This free annual block party will have tremendous live music, drinks, and plenty of food trucks. This year’s lineup includes Worldtown Soundsystem, Hardwork Movement, and is headlined Nicole Atkins.

13. Midsommarfest

Where: American Swedish Historical Museum, 1900 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 4PM-7PM

The American Swedish Museum will be hosting Midsommarfest this Saturday afternoon. There will be tasty Swedish pastries, food, drinks, live performances, maypole dancing, face painting, and more. For World Cup fans, there will be a special screening of Germany vs. Sweeden’s match at the festival.

14. Sundance Short Film Tour

Where: PhilaMOCA, 531 N 12th St.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 4:30PM & 7:30PM and Sunday, June 24th, 7:30PM

PhilaMOCA will be screening the seven short films shown at this year’s Sundance Film Festival this weekend.  Covering every genre of film, this mini-festival will give you a glimpse at this power brand of storytelling.

15. Union vs. Whitecaps FC

Where: Talen Energy Stadium, 1 Stadium Dr. Chester, PA
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 5PM

Fresh off their nail-biting win against the New York Red Bulls, the Philadelphia Union return to their home turf to take on Vancouver’s Whitecaps FC. Talen Energy Stadium will be rocking with raucous energy and excitement.

16. 40th Street Summer Series

Where: 40th St.  and Walnut St.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 6PM

The third Saturday of the month, the 40th Street Summer Series kicks off your weekend evening in the right way. This Saturday, Thee Phantom & the Illharmonic Orchestra with Tyva Kyzyto will be the featured act. This eclectic group held a sold-out show at The Rotunda earlier this year. Come out for this festivity of joy, music, and togetherness.

17. Silent Philly Opening Day at Schmidt’s Commons

Where: Schmidt’s Commons, 1001 N. 2nd St.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 8PM-12PM

The Schmidt’s Commons will be hosting its Opening Day Silent Philly party this Saturday night. Come to this open-air pavilion to listen to the best hits from several genres of music. The colorful headphones will be waiting at this all night dance party.

18. Night Nation Run

Where: XFINITY Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, June 23rd, 8:30PM

Night Nation Run continues lighting up cities across the nation. This Saturday the illuminating and rigorous 5K run will be lining the streets of Philadelphia. There will be a light show, live music stages, selfie stations, a bubble complex, and more at the color run festival.

19. Sunday Pop Up Plays

Where: Spruce Street Harbor Park, 301 S Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, June 24th, 11:30AM

Bring your family out to Pop Up Play each Sunday at Spruce Street Harbor Park. This interactive playtime will be guiding your kids through the themes of music, art, science, history, physics, and more. There will be plenty of games and smiles at this active event.

20. Philadelphia Irish Festival

Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 S. Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, June 24th, 12PM-1PM

PECO Multicultural Summer Series continues this Sunday with the 2018 Philadelphia Irish Festival. There will be phenomenal music, dancing performances, speakers, crafts, and food. From bagpipers to traditional dishes, this cultural celebration will be a sight to see.

21. Love Me Some Comedy

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Sunday, June 24th, 8:30PM

This Sunday’s rotational series Love Me Some Comedy will feature known standup act, Joe Clair. Host Skeet Carter and Clair will be bringing all the laughs to the venue this Sunday night. Laughter and a good time is always a great way to close out your weekend.

22. Paramore

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing, 601 N Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, June 24th, 7PM

Grammy award-winning band Paramore will be performing at the Festival Pier this Sunday might. Highlighted by opening acts Soccer Mon and Foster The People, The After Laughter Summer Tour will bring countless fans out to the waterfront venue. This powerful alternative rock trio will be one of the best shows of the weekend.
