What’s happening in Philly this weekend: July 20-22

Events Running Through the Weekend

1. Closing This Weekend: Mamma Mia! 

Where: Walnut Street Theatre, 825 Walnut St.
When: Runs through Sunday, July 22nd

Walnut Street Theatre’s production of the beloved musical Mamma Mia! is coming to an end this weekendOver 60 million people worldwide have listened to ABBA’s hits turned to Broadway phenomenon including, “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love On Me,” “Dancing Queen,” “Waterloo”, and others. Come to see the show before its too late.

2. Restaurant Weeks

Where: Various locations
When: Runs through Sunday, July 29th

University City Dining Days will continue through this Sunday. Come to this famed section of the city for three-course meals for $15, $25, and $35. For those in the outer region, there are several other restaurant week options for you. Ardmore Restaurant Week and Ambler Restaurant Week began this week. The wallet-friendly restaurant weeks offer up three-course prix-fixed menus starting at just $15. Ardmore’s runs through Sunday, July 29th and Ambler’s ends on Monday, July 23rd.

3. The Oval Reopens

Where: The Oval, 2451 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Opens through Sunday, August 19th.

This Friday is the opening day for The Oval. The ending loop of the parkway will be once again filling the area with food trucks, light structures, movie screenings, radio game shows, workshops, DJ dance parties, and more.

4. Phillies Weekend

Where: Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way
When: Friday, July 20th-Sunday, July 22nd

The Phillies are on fire. They are atop the NL East rankings and are taking the region by storm. This weekend they will be hosting the San Deigo Padres in a showdown with this National League foe. Come out to Citizens Bank Park this weekend to see the talk of the town live and in action.

5. Puma Block Party

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, July 20th, 3:30PM-7PM

Zhaire Smith isn’t the only person heralding Puma in the city. This Friday afternoon the global brand will be celebrating their most famous shoe, the Puma GV Special. There will be pop-up featuring live music, food, drinks, performers, and more. Parties will stretch from 30th Street station to 5th Street. If you stop at each location, you’ll be in the running to receive a free pair of GV’s.

6. Outdoor Movie Screenings

Where: Various locations
When: Friday, July 20th & Saturday, July 22nd

Free outdoor movie screenings become prominent in the city each summer. Don’t miss your opportunity to lay out with your friends and enjoy a night of entertainment. This Friday The Last Jedi will be playing at  Dilworth Park, The Greatest Showman will be front and center at The Oval,  Star Wars: A New Hope will be live at The Mann Center, and The Jungle Book will be shown at Bartram’s Garde. Don’t miss  Hugo at Trolley Car Diner this Saturday.

7. Philadelphia Freedoms with Kevin Anderson

Where: Hagan Arena at Saint Joseph’s University, 2450 N. 54th St.
When: Friday, July 20th, 7PM

The Philadelphia Freedoms are back touring for the season. The best names and most talented athletes in tennis. Fresh off his Wimbledon showing, South African pro will be live and in person at St. Joseph’s University. The season will feature stellar pros such as Sloane Stephens and more.

8. Jeremy Piven

Where: Punch Line Philly, 33 E. Laurel St.
When: Friday, July 20th-Sunday, July 22nd

Actor and entertainer Jeremy Piven will be hosting several events at laugh house Punch Line Philly this weekend. Known for several performances, including HBO’s Entourage and the new CBS series Wisdom of the Crowd, the performer will be producing laughs all night with his great delivery and jokes.

9. Beck

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing601 N. Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Friday, July 20th, 8PM

When Kanye West isn’t running up on the Grammy stage to heckle his Album of the Year win, Beck is a talented singer-songwriter. In 2017 Beck released his 13th studio album Colors. Come out to the Festival Pier to hear this amazing talent.

10. Zac Brown Band

Where: BB&T Pavillon, 1 Harbour Blvd. Camden, NJ
When: Friday, July 20th, 7PM

Zac Brown Band will be performing two shows at BB&T Pavillion this week. This Thursday and Friday, the powerhouse country act will serenading fans at the BB&T Pavilion. The three-time Grammy award-winners will be singing countless hits from their spanning and chart-topping anthology.

11. Artist Bash at The Barnes

Where: Barnes Foundation, 2025 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.
When: Friday, July 20th, 8PM-11PM

The Barnes Foundation will be bursting with talent this Friday night. Spanish flamenco act La Éimi,  National Poetry Slam champion G Yamazawa, and others will be on display at this Philadelphia artistic pillar. Fans of  Afro–Puerto Rican bomba and plena will love the sounds of Los Bomberos de la Calle. Recognizing the bonds of diversity that fill the tapestry of civilization, these acts will provide glimpses of the “Historical Memory” of several cultures.

12. Watch What Crappens

Where: World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St.
When: Friday, July 20th, 7PM

Ben Mandelker and Ronnie Karam will be recording their Bravo centered podcast live at World Cafe Live this Friday. Whether they’re talking Top Chef, Real Housewives, and beyond, they know how to bring the punchlines.

13. Summerfest Live!

Where: Xfinity Live!,  1100 Pattison Ave. 
When: Saturday, July 21st, 3PM-7PM

This Saturday is Summerfest Live! at Xfinity Live! This craft beer festival will feature samples from hundreds of beers at the entertainment venue. There will be food, several prizes and giveaways, a flip cup tournament, live music, karaoke, and more.

14. SmörgåsBeer

Where: American Swedish Historical Museum, 1900 Pattison Ave.
When: Saturday, July 21st, 5PM-8PM

Another beer festival taking place this Saturday is SmörgåsBeer at the American Swedish Historical Museum. The FDR Park institution will be featuring brews from Yards Brewing Company, Saint Benjamin Brewing Company, Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company, Crooked Eye Brewery, and several others. WXPN host & DJ Robert Drake will be providing the soundtrack for the event. There will be prizes, food, games, and more.

15. Union vs. Galaxy

Where: Talen Energy Stadium, 1 Stadium Dr, Chester, PA
When: Saturday, July 21st, 7PM

The Philadelphia Union will be trying to protect their home turf this Saturday night when they take on the LA Galaxy. Fresh off their previous win against Atlanta, the squad will look to have Talen Energy Stadium rocking under the light. Come out for a night of high energy athleticism.

16. City Hall Silent Party

Where: City Hall, 1401 JFK Blvd.
When: Saturday, July 21st, 9PM-1AM

Silent Philly is prepared to fill the inner atrium and openings of City Hall to throw a massive party this Saturday night. Partygoers will be coming out to slide on those colorful headphones and dance the night away listening to their favorite music.

17. Cedric The Entertainer

Where: SugarHouse Casino, 1001 N. Delaware Ave.
When: Saturday, July 21st, 9PM

Successful comedian and actor Cedric The Entertainer will be doing a full show at SugarHouse Casino this Saturday night. The event center will be full fans of the Barbershop, Madagascar, The Last OG, and beyond act. This will be the place to be for great laughs this weekend.

18. Weezer

Where: BB&T Pavilion, 1 Harbour Blvd. Camden, NJ
When: Saturday, July 21st, 7:30PM

Weezer and the Pixies will be playing at BB&T Pavilion this Saturday night. The outdoor amphitheater will host the 90s alternative rock bands. The co-headlining tour will be a lot of fun and provide a great night of entertainment.

19. Radio 104.5 Block Party

Where: Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing601 N. Christopher Columbus Blvd.
When: Sunday, July 22nd, 2PM

Blue October, Jukebox the Ghost, Knox Hamilton, Brother Sundance, and  Morgan Saint will be rocking the house at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing this Sunday. Radio 104.5’s Summer Block Party will be full of fantastic tunes, a lively crowd, and so much more.

20. Ne-Yo

Where: Dell Music Center, Strawberry Mansion Dr.
When: Sunday, July 22nd, 7PM

Ne-Yo released his seventh studio album, Good Man, this year. The R&B singer, writer, and producer has been responsible for some of the top hits in R&B and Pop over the last few decades. This Fairmount Park amphitheater will be filled with his signature sound and Lyfe Jennings’ talent.
