Carson Wentz is close, he’s just not close enough.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles will start in the Philadelphia Eagles’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night.
The #Eagles plan to start QB Nick Foles on Thursday in the season opener, sources say. Carson Wentz (ACL, LCL) has done fantastic in rehab. But this is a long-term decision for the face of the franchise.

Yahoo Sports’ Jordan Schultz said via his Twitter account that Wentz is “on the verge” of starting.
League sources believe Carson Wentz is on the verge of starting. But taking precaution with Foles is clearly the right move for the #Eagles. https://t.co/Zr3SZ5BsIe

It was a few weeks ago that Wentz made an appearance on WIP’s Morning Show and proclaimed that “it was going to be close” as to whether or not he’d be ready for Atlanta.
“I obviously would love to be out there. That’s been my goal all offseason ever since the injury. It’s going to be close. It’s going to be close. I’m still eyeing that date. At the end of the day, it’s not just my decision. There’s coaches and doctors that really have the final say. I really like where I’m at and time will tell here.”
So when will Wentz be back? Maybe Sports Illustrated’s Peter King was onto something when he stated that he believed he’d be back Week 3 against Indianapolis. Here’s what he had to say on the Dan Patrick Show.
I find it very, very hard to believe that he’ll play the first week or two. I think it’s more realistic to think about him against Indianapolis in Week 3 at home. It’s almost a friendly: you’re not playing a tough defense and probably not going to face a tremendous amount of pressure.
If I had to guess, I think he’s starting Week 3 as well.
