PGA Valero Texas Open Round 3 match-up play

While this PGA Tour event doesn’t have the big draw of next week’s The Masters, there is no reason why we can’t continue to build the bankroll. I have watched these last two rounds at the Valero Texas Open, and I have seen how difficult TPC San Antonio has been for most golfers. Observing these last two rounds has shown me which golfers have had the most complete game going into the third round. I spotted one match-up that I feel is a good play even as an underdog.

Here’s why I love this play:

Brandon Hagy (+106) vs. Lucas Glover

You are probably asking yourself, who is Brandon Hagy? Not a household name by any means, but I am not concerned about that. His play has been outstanding these last two rounds. He has recorded SG:OTT 3.94, SG:APP 2.52, SG:ARG 2.39, and SG:T2G 8.85. His only flaw has been his putter, and he sits at 8th place with a -4 score. Lucas Glover is also tied for 8th with a -4 score.

As I talked about on The Daily Ticket with Sean Brace [available below], I believe strokes gained around the green is very important at this course. The greens are undulated and cause big run-offs. An around-the-green game is important here, because you need to be able to stick the greens and give yourself a good putt. Hagy is almost two strokes better than glover for SG:ARG, and is coming off a terrible putting round, but I do not believe he will do worse than that.

Glover statistically is a worse putter than him and is putting two strokes better than him. I see this coming to an end and Hagy’s complete game will shine here, and this is why I love taking the dog in this match-up!

Let’s start this weekend on the right foot!
