Carter Hart, Sean Couturier propel Flyers to home win over Coyotes

The Philadelphia Flyers were left frustrated at the Wells Fargo Center through the opening 40 minutes of Monday’s showdown with the winless Arizona Coyotes, but eventually relied on their top offensive line to breakthrough.

Sean Couturier’s game-winning goal sprung the Flyers in front before Scott Laughton and Claude Giroux also added goals in a 3-0 victory over the Coyotes. Carter Hart pitched a 29-save shutout for the Orange and Black, who rebounded from Saturday’s shutout defeat to the Calgary Flames in Alberta.

Couturier has remained one of the key pieces on this Flyers squad and the veteran center propelled the Flyers in front with 13:06 left to play. His snap shot attempt in his 700th career game off of a Travis Konecny pass in front of goal broke the deadlock for Alain Vigneault’s side, and eventually opened the door for another pair of goals for the team in the final half of the third period.

Laughton’s snap shot with 2:09 remaining iced the win for the Flyers, giving him his second goal of the season and assists to both James van Riemsdyk and Justin Braun.

Giroux added his fifth goal of the campaign to add an empty net finish to the final score, capping the Flyers 3-0 result on home ice. Couturier and Travis Sanheim were credited with assists on the goal, giving the Flyers a fifth victory out of their eighth game played in the new campaign.

Despite ending up on the losing end, Coyotes goaltender Karel Vejmelka was sensational in goal, making 31 saves and being the lone bright spot on the night for Arizona. Shayne Gostisbehere made his return to Broad Street for the first time following his trade this offseason, totaling 19:31 of ice time.

The Flyers hit the road on Thursday for the first meeting with rivals Pittsburgh this season before also visiting the Washington Capitals on Saturday.
