Daniel Briere had some memorable years with the Philadelphia Flyers as a player and will now test his skills in the team’s front office.
Briere has been named the Special Assistant to the General Manager, the Flyers announced Tuesday. Briere will report to Chuck Fletcher as part of his day-to-day role with the Orange and Black, his first front office position within the NHL franchise.
“I’m very happy to add Danny to our hockey operations team in a full-time role,” said Fletcher. “His insight and experience from 25 years in professional hockey, as well as first-hand knowledge of the Philadelphia Flyers, is a valuable asset for our organization and I look forward to working closely with him on a day-to-day basis.”
Briere, 44, will be involved in all aspects of the club’s hockey operations including scouting and player development. He joins the Flyers hockey operations staff after parts of five years with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL, most recently as the President and Governor of the team.
In addition to his duties with Maine, Briere has worked in the Flyers player development department for the last two seasons in a part-time role working with the club’s prospects, as well as current players, both on and off the ice. He also spent two seasons in the Flyers front office business operations prior to joining the Mariners.
“I’m excited for this new opportunity to join the Flyers hockey operations department,” said Briere. “Philadelphia is a place that I’ve called home for a long time and have had some of the most memorable moments in my career. I want to thank Chuck Fletcher and Dave Scott for their confidence and support over the last several years, and I look forward to helping them continue to build a successful team on and off the ice.”
Briere spent six seasons as a member of the Flyers during his lengthy playing career in the NHL. The Gatineau, Quebec native recorded 124 goals and 159 assists for 283 points in 364 regular season games with the Flyers. He also delivered 37 goals and 35 assists for 69 points in 69 playoff games with the Flyers.
A former first round draft pick by the Phoenix Coyotes in 199, Briere spent 17 years in the NHL where he recorded 307 goals and 389 assists for 696 points in 973 regular season games with the Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Flyers, Montreal Canadiens, and Colorado Avalanche.
Briere never lifted a Stanley Cup title during his NHL career, but did with two Gold Medals with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championships in 2003 and 2004.
The Flyers resume regular season play on Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Center against the Detroit Red Wings.
