Rasmus Ristolainen has excelled for the Philadelphia Flyers in his first season with the team and earned himself a lengthy contract extension for his efforts.
Ristolainen was signed to a five-year extension at an annual average value of $5.1 million per season, the team announced. The veteran defenseman has recorded 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) in 49 games this season for the Orange and Black. He has logged an average of 21:22 of ice time, which ranks third on the team of players who have played more than 10 games this season.
“Rasmus is an important part of our team and we are very happy to have him on our blue line for the next five years,” said Flyers GM and president of hockey operations Chuck Fletcher. “He is committed to being a Flyer and brings a consistent physical presence to our team.”
The 6-feet-4, 220-pound defenseman leads the team in hits (177), which ranks third among all NHL defensemen and is tied for eighth among all players. He is also third on the Flyers in blocked shots (90). Ristolainen has continued to play a leading role for the Flyers, especially with Ryan Ellis remaining sidelined through injury.
Ristolainen was acquired by the Flyers in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres last summer, in exchange for the Flyers first-round draft pick in 2021, the team’s second-round draft pick in 2022, and defenseman Robert Hagg.
“I’m very happy and I really wanted to stay. It’s a great feeling to have it done before the deadline,” said Ristolainen. “I love this city. I love the fans. I love my teammates and I want to be here when we turn it around next year.
Ristolainen is closing in on his 600th regular-season appearance in his NHL career after previously playing eight seasons with the Sabres.
The Flyers return to action tonight against the Florida Panthers.
