Eagles sack Carson Wentz nine times in dominant win over Commanders

If anyone knew how to keep Carson Wentz under check, it was the Philadelphia Eagles, and that is exactly what Jonathan Gannon’s defense did on Sunday in a dominant victory at Fedex Field.

Gannon’s defense sacked Wentz nine times in a 24-8 win over the Washington Commanders, moving to 3-0 in the 2022 NFL season. Jalen Hurts threw for 340 yards and three touchdowns, DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown each recorded one receiving touchdown apiece, and Brandon Graham totaled 2.5 of the Eagles nine sacks in the first NFC East win of the campaign.

After a scoreless first quarter at Fedex Field, the Eagles offense kicked things into gear in the second quarter with both units delivering impressive moments. Following Jake Elliott’s 32-yard field goal seven seconds into the quarter, the Eagles defensive front continued to pester Wentz, as Josh Sweat, Graham, and Fletcher Cox all recorded sacks of their own.

Javon Hargrave also recovered a Wentz fumble, giving the traveling Eagles fans plenty to cheer about in Landover.

Hurts’ first touchdown pass of the game came on a dump off to tight end Dallas Goedert, as the veteran rushed into the end zone from 23 yards out.

A.J. Brown watched as DeVonta Smith played a leading role in the first half, but the veteran wide out celebrated his first Eagles touchdown with less than three minutes until halftime. Brown’s catch and stretch from nine yards out extended the Eagles advantage to 17-0 and continued a strong day for the passing game.

Another three and out from the Commanders offense allowed Hurts the opportunity to toss his third touchdown pass of the first half, with some help from Smith’s acrobatics down field. Smith’s freakish catch on a 44-yard grab helped set up the first touchdown of the year for the former Heisman trophy winner as he eventually snagged a Hurts pass in the corner of the end zone.

The Eagles continued to cause havoc defensively, holding Wentz and the Commanders offense to less than 100 yards of production heading into the fourth quarter. Boston Scott’s negative run in the fourth quarter paired with Antonio Gibson’s one-yard touchdown run gave the Commanders eight insurance points, but overall the Eagles cruised to a third-straight win of the season.

Wentz finished with only 211 yards passing while the Eagles defense also held the Commanders rushing attack to only 87 yards on the ground. The Eagles claimed a third-straight win over Washington in head-to-head action.

The Eagles (3-0) return to Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday for a Week 4 non-conference showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
