Flyers re-sign Morin, extend qualifying offers to four players

Samuel Morin made a positional change for the Philadelphia Flyers in 2020-21 and has earned a new contract heading into the new season.

The Flyers announced Monday they’ve signed Morin to a one-year contract extension with an Average Annual Value (AAV) of $750,000. Morin, a defenseman by trade, saw increased playing time last season as a left winger, with hopes of staying off the injury list.

A former first round pick in 2013, Morin appeared in 20 of his 29 career games this past season and recorded his first NHL goal, which was a game-winning goal vs. the New York Rangers on March 27. He averaged 10:12 of ice time per-game. Despite being limited to 20 games, he ranked third on the team in penalty minutes (37) and recorded 38 hits.

Morin has spent parts of the last five seasons with the Flyers organization, appearing in 29 games with one goal and 45 penalty minutes. He twice battled back from season-ending knee injuries that required surgery.

The Flyers also extended qualifying contract offers to goaltender Carter Hart, defenseman Travis Sanheim, and forwards David Kase and Connor Bunnaman.

Hart regressed last season for the Flyers, registering a 9-11-5 record and a 3.67 goals against average. The 22-year-old for now is without veteran Brian Elliott heading into the new season and could be forced into a bigger role as Alain Vigneault’s team tries to rebound from missing the playoffs.

Sanheim featured in 55 games last season, scoring three goals and registering 12 assists for 15 points. He took a bigger role for the Flyers, averaging 21:53 of ice time per game and could see an improved role this season following the departures of Shayne Gostisbehere and Robert Hagg.

The 24-year-old Kase has only played in seven NHL games for the Flyers in his career, scoring one goal. Kase has appeared in 110 games for AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley Phantoms, scoring 18 goals and registering 33 assists for 51 points.

Bunnaman is a lower-line player for the Flyers, appearing normally on the bottom two offensive lines. The 23-year-old has only three points in 39 career NHL games.
