Flyers pull away in third period to down Bruins

The Philadelphia Flyers saw a two-goal lead evaporate in the second period of Wednesday’s Eastern Conference showdown with the Boston Bruins. Alain Vigneault’s team responded by scoring a trio of third period goals as the Orange and Black scored six goals for the second-consecutive game.

Cam Atkinson scored twice for the Flyers while goaltender Martin Jones made 37 saves in a 6-3 win over the Bruins at the Wells Fargo Center. Atkinson, Travis Konecny, and Sean Couturier each found the back of the net in the third period, giving the Flyers a second-consecutive regulation triumph.

After some early pressure from Bruce Cassidy’s team, the Flyers scored first with Atkinson wristing a shot past Jeremy Swayman 8:08 into the first period. Derick Brassard and Justin Braun were credited with assists as the offseason acquisition continued his impressive start in Philly.

Karson Kuhlman’s equalizer helped Boston draw level in the final five minutes of the opening period, but Joel Farabee’s power-play goal off a rebound put the Flyers back in front 2-1 before the first intermission.

Keith Yandle’s smart dump play down the ice allowed James Van Riemsdyk to force Swayman into a tight-angle save, but Scott Laughton was on the spot to slam home the rebound 1:58 into the second period. It was Laughton’s first goal of the new season.

Boston did not lie down though as Taylor Hall’s breakaway finish paired with Brad Marchand’s rebound goal helped the Bruins tie things up 3-3 going into the third period. Despite Jones’ best efforts, the Flyers defense failed to deal with either forward on those plays, giving the home fans a bit of worry heading into the final 20 minutes.

Atkinson continued to be an early bright spot as his wrist shot past Swayman 0:58 into the third period swung momentum into Philly’s favor. The veteran forward picked up a pass from Farabee and was able to beat Swayman for the second time in the game.

Boston continued to pressure for an equalizer in the third, but Konecny’s top-shelf finish with 8:43 remaining truly iced the win for the Flyers. Sean Couturier added an empty net goal in the final moments to cap off the home win, giving a packed Wells Fargo Center plenty to cheer about heading home.

The Flyers will close out a four-game homestand on Saturday against the Florida Panthers.
