Catching up with the Birds

A lot of Eagles content gets published each day, so here’s a recap of your Eagles news from this past week.

At least the trade rumors are over.

Finally!

It’s still going to be a long next few days. Even though we’re pretty sure which quarterback the Philadelphia Eagles are picking at No. 2, I’m still anxious. The Los Angeles Rams are reportedly selecting Jared Goff, which leaves the Eagles with Carson Wentz. There are other storylines too. Are the Eagles going to respect Sam Bradford’s wish and trade him? How is Howie Roseman going to attack the draft with limited ammunition? What positions will he address?

I liked Wednesday’s trade. It was bold, daring and a bit crazy.

The trade can be simply broken down like this. The Eagles clearly think they won’t have this type of opportunity again of being in the top ten and landing a true franchise quarterback. Cleveland knows it stinks and can attack the position next year while bringing in a bunch of picks to jump-start the rebuild and finding out if the quarterback whisperer and head coach Hue Jackson can work some magic with Robert Griffin III.

Sure, the Eagles have a plethora of holes to fill and keeping those picks would’ve plugged a few of them, but I don’t picture this current roster as one that’s going to make a deep playoff run in the next few years. Bradford is simply not getting you there.

I’m looking at what this team could look like three years from now. If the Eagles find their future franchise quarterback in this draft and lock up Fletcher Cox and build the defense around him, all of a sudden there’s some serious potential. Cox is still just 25 years old as well. I am completely OK with being mediocre for a few years while waiting to get the picks back. This current team how it’s made up is basically treading in mediocrity already.

Onto the links:

The Eagles traded up to the No. 2 spot Wednesday even though eight days remained until the NFL Draft. I like the trade and thinks it makes sense. Bradford was reportedly hot about the deal and might request a trade, but the Eagles would have to eat a lot of money if they decide to do so.

Roseman reiterated that Fletcher Cox wasn’t going anywhere when he and Doug Pederson met with reporters Monday. The Pro Bowl defensive lineman didn’t show up to voluntary minicamp, which began Monday. He remains in a seemingly never-ending contract dispute with the team. Pederson discussed Wentz and Goff in that meeting with reporters.

The Eagles added another speedster to the wide receiver core, signing T.J. Graham to a one-year deal. They now have nine receivers on the roster and still might add another in the draft. Check out our wide receiver rankings.

Donnie Jones might have some competition come training camp this summer. The Eagles signed former New York Jets punter Ryan Quigley to a one-year contract on Monday.
