Catching up with the Birds: Showing Trey Burton Some Love

A lot of Eagles content gets published each day, so here’s a recap of your Eagles news from this past week.

For Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson’s three tight end sets to work, the 13 personnel packages to flourish, you obviously need to have three capable tight ends to run it.

And not only do the Eagles have that, Trey Burton is proving how versatile he can be. He didn’t really have that opportunity before because in Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense, it doesn’t allow for substitution packages. Burton caught just three passes last season.

When Burton enrolled at Florida, he was a dual-threat quarterback before later making the transition to wide receiver, tight end and even fullback. That experience is beginning to translate at the pro level and Burton is showcasing how much of a mismatch problem he can be.

Burton caught five passes for 35 yards during Saturday night’s 33-23 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts, but it wasn’t his numbers which caught my eye, it’s everywhere Pederson had him. We saw him as a tight end and wide receiver, lining up all over the place on the field. I’ve also seen him in the backfield as a halfback earlier this preseason.

If Darren Sproles is a swiss-army knife, what does that make Burton? Even on special teams last year, Burton led the unit with 19 tackles.

He can do it all.

On to the links:

There were a few surprises among the 10 roster moves the Eagles made Sunday, including the releases of free-agent wide receivers Rueben Randle and Chris Givens.  I talked about why Givens being cut was not a surprise. And so much for Randle proving his doubters wrong.

The Eagles are preseason champs once again! Here’s a recap of their win over the Colts on Saturday night.

A couple Carson Wentz posts from the past week. Former Eagles head coach Andy Reid explained how he would handle the Wentz situation and former Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress believes that Wentz is the “holy grail” of quarterback prospects.  We also found out how Wentz is progressing from his rib injury.

Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman made headlines in Philadelphia after taking shots at Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford. Pederson was reluctant to comment on the matter a day later.

In other Eagles news, Lane Johnson is suing the manufacturer of the amino acid supplement, Howie Roseman may not be done making moves and Ron Jaworski gave his thoughts on Fletcher Cox and Bennie Logan.

And speaking of Jaworski, his Philadelphia Soul won ArenaBowl XXIX on Friday night.
