Catching up with the Birds: Don’t Cut Paul Turner

A lot of Eagles content gets published each day, so here’s a recap of your Eagles news from this past week.

I’m really curious to see how the wide receiver position plays itself out and if Doug Pederson has the cojones to keep Paul Turner on the main roster.

Josh Huff, Rueben Randle and Chris Givens haven’t shown much of anything so far, while the undrafted rookie out of Louisiana Tech has been the only Philadelphia Eagles receiver to not drop passes. He’s literally been catching everything and it’s hard to argue that he shouldn’t make the 53-man roster.

But seniority usually rules in the NFL and Turner was undrafted. So will the head coach go by the book and take experience over youth, or will he take a bold stance and keep Turner around? The acquisition of Dorial Green-Beckham doesn’t help things for Turner either.

If it were me, I’d keep Randle around, but Huff is still nauseating to watch and Givens hasn’t shown anything since his rookie season. He’s a one-trick pony who has yet to catch a pass in the preseason, while Turner has hauled in nine balls on 10 targets and tallied 78 yards receiving over his two games. He’s also led the Eagles in receiving in those two victories over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers.

There’s some similarities between Turner and how Rasheed Bailey impressed last summer, except Bailey didn’t even make the practice squad. Sure, you can place Turner on that 10-man squad, but then there’s the chance that another team will scoop him up. If Huff and Givens continue to show nothing and Turner is still lighting it up over his last two games, he deserves to make the team.

On to the links:

The Eagles acquired Dorial Green-Beckham Tuesday from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for offensive lineman Dennis Kelly. I offered a glimpse into the upside of Green-Beckham by looking at some film of his 100-yard-plus performances against the Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots. Sean Brace was able to get video of Green-Beckham’s arrival in Philadelphia. Brian Dawkins stated that it’s not about the past anymore when it pertains to Green-Beckham, who spoke with reporters for the first time following Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  There was a report that Green-Beckham showed up overweight to OTAs back in the spring, but he didn’t appear to look out of shape Thursday. We also had the top Twitter reactions to the Green-Beckham deal.

As for the other side of the ledger, the Titans explained why they did the deal for Kelly, who issued a heartfelt statement thanking the fans.

The Eagles’ defense appears to be in midseason form; the offense, not so much. Nolan Carroll had one of the Eagles’ four interceptions, which was returned 38 yards for a touchdown, and Philadelphia blanked the Pittsburgh Steelers 17-0 Thursday night in preseason action.

According to Adam Schefter, the Eagles are expected to sign Stephen Tulloch.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross joined The Straight Shooters wrestling podcast to preview WWE’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, but the die-hard Oklahoma fan also discussed Sam Bradford and his thoughts on Lane Johnson’s looming suspension.

In other Eagles news, Carson Wentz hopes to play in the preseason finale,  Caleb Sturgis suffered a concussion after a punt hit him in the head during warmups prior to the Steelers game, four more players were released Sunday and Bradford hopes he doesn’t have to call many audibles this season.
